MUBE’S DIRECTIVE AGAINST HSBC – A SUCCESS

Today the Malta Union of Bank Employees -MUBE issued a directive instructing members at HSBC to boycott the Let’s Lead conference, a main bank event which is held annually. The Directive was issued following disagreement in relation to Collective Agreement negotiations. MUBE confirms that the overall response was a success despite bank’s intense pressure especially on the managerial grades.

MUBE and HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c. formally commenced collective agreement negotiations in October 2013. Negotiations resumed only in January 2014 after ignoring MUBE’s plea to retain the momentum and continue discussions also during November and December 2013.

Regrettably, discussions turned sour after the bank unilaterally announced that it will award a salary percentage increase to employees during a most sensitive time when negotiations were still underway. The bank also ignored MUBE’s request for an official reply by Monday 3 February 2014 on three principal issues relating to the salary percentage pot, the term of the Collective Agreement and the Home Loan interest rate applicable to HSBC employees. No official reply has been received from HSBC to date.

The MUBE submitted clear, concrete and reasonable collective agreement proposals which fairly compensate all employees for their commitment, increased productivity, responsibility and daily work challenges and pressures. It is to be noted that whilst MUBE is the only party making proposals, HSBC has practically come up with nothing to enhance the possibility to reach an amicable solution to the current impasse.
